A Global Resume to Land International Jobs

A Global Resume to Land International JobsA Global Resume to Land International JobsAn international public health program manager receives a resume makeover. Easy-to-read over easy-to-forgetHis old CV welches written in an outline format with Roman numeral headers and job roles delineated by lettered subsections or bulleted lines. The design welches neither visually attractive nor easy to read. It looked like the outline of a senior-class theme paper, elend a resume. We overhauled the format and brought in the paragraph/bullet style to highlight important points. We also reorganized the education section to highlight the degrees it contained. Dates in the education were eliminated because they betrayed his age and showed a date gap of seven years that followed his first degree. Then we streamlined the information to a much more informative and concise two pages rather than a slack three pages. The new visual appearance is much more inviting and reader-friendly. Word choice is critica lThe client had led the old CV with an objective statement that did not really say anything of valueMaking use of my experience and skills to ensure good management of public health interventions targeting fruchtwein vulnerable and underserved population. We replaced that with a very clear branding statement that immediately positions him for the type of work he was targetingSenior HIV/AIDS Technical Advisor Project OfficerWe also expanded the opening profile to paint a sharper portrait of the clients strengths. The core-competencies section captured important keywords and concentrated them at the top of the resume for added emphasis. We also trimmed the training section to eliminate redundant phrasing and simplify the message. Dont ask the recruiter to read between the lines.Remember Work history should be transparent. The chronology of the old CV was confusing, making it difficult to follow the clients career progression and geographical moves. In the new resume, we standardized t he organization and grouped the positions by employer to clarify the career history while still showing the wide geographic supervision responsibility he had in Africa.Jargon and awkward wording made the old CV difficult to understand, especially by recruiters and other readers who may not be medical professionals. We eased up on acronyms, abbreviations and jargon and replaced them with content that was still professional but much more clear and concise.Demonstrate cutting-edge skills by expanding on only the most recent role. The job descriptions received a complete overhaul. In the old CV, he had only briefly described his roles, so we expanded on the more recent experience. In his field, research, treatments and methodologies are ever-evolving, so we concentrated on recent activities to show he is current in the field and versed in all elements of the health crisis. We placed more emphasis on the achievements/highlights in each position so his resume will stand out among other ca ndidates as someone with a record of getting things done in highly political situations. Passive language such as assisting in and working with was replaced with stronger action verbs, and the incorrect use of the narrative was eliminated. Finally, there was an inconsistent use of English versus French on parts of the old CV. Since the new resume was to be presented in English, it was important that terminology and wording be consistently written in English therefore, some translation was required. Good mechanics are essential in all languages, so we made sure his presentation was grammatically sound. The fruits of the rewrite a new document in the modern global resume format that will work for him in the U.S. and around the world. A former mish mash of information in a format that was academic at best is now a career marketing document that shines the spotlight on him as a great candidate.

Engineering Styles

Engineering Styles Engineering Styles Engineering StylesThe number of dicke bretter bohren mssens we each can solve alone is getting smaller. Not only are there more schwierigkeits than any one person can handle, but no one person has the brainpower to coveron his or her ownthe wide range of knowledge and expertise that is so often required. It is equally clear that different approaches to dicke bretter bohren mssen solving are needed along the way, ranging from those that strengthen and refine the systems we create to those that shake up those systems and replace them. To gather all the knowledge we need to solve complex herausforderungs, we know that we must collaborate. Paradoxically, in order to collaborate and solve problems effectively, we need to know even moreand about different things. Level and Style Two key variables are problem solving level and problem solving style. dicke bretter bohren mssen solving level (also called cognitive level) refers to a persons mental resourc es for solving problems its a measure of a persons cognitive capacity, or how much a person knows about different things. This is the area that concerns us when we talk about intelligence or talent, for example, as well as about someones knowledge, experience, or skill. Most people have a good understanding of level. We routinely assign projects and design teams based on who knows what and on how well each person performs certain tasks. We reward and promote individuals based on how much they do and how quickly they get it done. All of these forms of level are reasonably easy to measure, which may explain why we depend on them so much for assessing performance and for constructing teams. But level is only one piece of the puzzle. Problem solving style is equally important, but unfortunately, it is more often misunderstood and mismanaged. Problem solving style (also called cognitive style) is a persons preferred cognitive approach to solving problems. It is the way a person prefers t o use his or her cognitive resources when it comes to problem solving. For engineers and engineering managers, one particularly useful way to view problem solving style is through its relationship to structure. In general, the more adaptive a person is, the more structure one prefers when solving problems. The more innovative a person is, the less structure one prefers when problem solving, and the less one is concerned about reaching consensus first. The value of Adaptive problem solving is clear It provides continuity and stability. In contrast, Innovative problem solvers are liable to think tangentially and to question a problems definition and core assumptions because of their preference for working with less structure. The value of innovative problem solving is also clear, supplying radical breaks from tradition when they are necessary and solving problems through restructuring and increased flexibility. Innovative problem solvers often will change a system first, in order to s olve challenges. Over time, a team or an organization without Innovation will also fail, but the path to failure looks different. Sorting Out Level and Style In order to understand the situation fully, its important to realize that problem solving level and problem solving style are independent. Sorting out level and style isnt always easy, because a person may be using coping behavior to perform in ways that differ from his or her preferred style. When first presented with Kirtons work, many people ask So, given the Adaption-Innovation continuum of problem solving styles, is there one style thats best? The short answer is in general, no. Every problem solving style has its own advantages and disadvantages in the face of a particular problem. In general, adaption has the advantage when the solution to the current problem (or subproblem) can be found within the established system, but it may fail if it hangs on to that system too long. Likewise, there is no best combination of style s in a problem solving team. Teams of individuals with similar styles may be easier to manage because the team members get along more readily, but their breadth of problem solving is narrower. They may be able to solve a certain kind of problem very well, but they will be less effective with other types of problems. In contrast, teams with dissimilar style have a wider array of problem solving style and, therefore, can solve more kinds of problems well. Still, they are typically more difficult to manage. The need for this kind of diversity arises from the nature of structure itself. In the end, the challenge for a leader is to manage the level and style diversity of the team in ways that balance the value and cost of its members diversity and keep the ultimate resolution of its goal in mind. Adapted from The Substance of Our Styles, by Kathryn Jablokow, for Mechanical Engineering, February 2007. Every problem solving style has its own advantages and disadvantages in the face of a pa rticular problem.

I work for a boy band fan site

I work for a boy band fan site I work for a boy band fan site A reader writesI have a question regarding job or volunteer experience that could be considered sort of embarrassing. I recently took over as a site administrator (or as the site wants to call me webmistress but that seems awkward and dominatrix-y to me) of a fan site for a well-known 90s boy band. It was never something I planned to do, but sort of fell into my lap as the original site creator was retiring and wanted someone who knew the back end of the website to take over. I was hesitant to take on anotlageher volunteer project, but in the end decided to step in when I realized that it could only help build my skills as a social media marketer and content creator. My question is whether or not its appropriate to put this kind of experience on my resume. Obviously, Im not embarrassed to like the group how could I be if I curate news about them every day but its not something that has ever come up in a professional setti ng before, and I dont know how potential employers might respond. On the one hand, I feel like Im already working against the entitled young person label, and drawing attention to the fact that I have a slight obsession with a boy band from the 90s might reinforce the young and inexperienced stereotype. On the other, Im adding quantifiable achievements to my resume if I can announce that Ive increased unique page views by 15% in a 2-month period or Ive successfully run an internet event celebrating an anniversary for the group that resulted in a 50% increase in video views, 12% increase in Facebook followers and 300% increase in interaction. What are your thoughts?Put it on there.First, as you point out, it gives you quantifiable achievements, and thats great. Achievements are achievements, and no amount of soulful crooning or heavily choreographeddance moves can take away from that.Second, its going to jump out to lots of people simply because of its novelty value and theyre going to ask you about it. As long as you have a sense of humor about it, this will be a good thing.Third, please immediatelytell us who it is.You can read an update to this deutsche bundesposthere.

Why You Shouldnt Underestimate the Importance of a Cover Letter

Why You Shouldnt Underestimate the Importance of a Cover LetterWhy You Shouldnt Underestimate the Importance of a Cover LetterJob seekers often spend a great deal of time perfecting their resume. And while a strong one can play a large part in landing an interview, applicants should not ignore the importance of a titel letter. It may be as(if not more) important to grabbing an employers attention. Most people dont understand what a titelbild letter is designed to do, so they dont value them, says Porschia Parker, founder ofFly High Coaching. A cover letter is another marketing tool thats part of your professional brand. It helps to make your initial impression on the reviewer/hiring manager and lets them know briefly why youre a great fit for the position.Need further evidence about the importance of a cover letter? Consider the following reasons why you should treat your cover letter with the same respect as your resumeSome hiring managers wont consider your application without one.Si nce a good cover letter cant be whipped off, employers often view a thoughtful one as a sign that you are truly interested in this particular position. The letter also provides the hiring manager a way to judge your communication abilities and attention to detail. You can stress desirable attributes.Does a central theme or trait keep popping up in the job posting or in your research on this company? Highlight your strength in this area. The cover letter can contain actual examples from your experience, providing a more memorable impression than only touching on this quality in a resume. It provides the opportunity to explain yourself. The way I see it, the cover letter is a chance to saywhat is NOT in a resume. Job seekers should fill in the gaps a bit, says Vicky Oliver, author of301 Smart Answers to Tough Interview Questions. For career changers, such a forum may make the difference between consideration and the rejection pile. You wont be the typical candidate that hiring managers are looking for, and odds are that you wont necessarily meet every preference/requirement they have. The cover letter is your opportunity to mention your transferrable skills and reassure them that you can meet their expectations, Parker says. She also notes that cover letters can be incredibly important to those reentering the workforce. Some people might assume that your skills wont be sharp or that you dont have current knowledge for the role.Youcan address those concerns and explain your absence in a cover letter, Parker says. You demonstrate personality.Remember, people hire people they like. A cover letter helps the reader get to know you and envision you as a member of the team. Some candidates find it nerve-wracking to walk that fine line between being personable and oversharing, but the effort can pay off big time.As Oliver says, The truth is that a good cover letter entails some risk because, unlike a resume, a cover letter has a voice. Whether the tone of theletter is sincere, elegant, or self-deprecating, its as if the job seeker is speaking to the potential employer. The key thing to remember is that the biggest risk in a cover letter is taking no risk at all.

How to Socialize at Work When You Dont Drink - The Muse

How to Socialize at Work When You Dont Drink - The MuseHow to Socialize at Work When You Dont Drink There are certain personal conversations that inevitably (and sometimes awkwardly) make their way into the workplace. For example, you might have to tell your boss that youre vegan when they schedule a business lunch at your local steakhouse. Or, maybe you need to mention that youre color blind and have trouble parsing charts that are red and green (true story, my brother had to do this). Or you might have to reveal during your company happy hour that you dont drink. This can be an especially tricky situation, as alcohol is a pretty common part of socializing with co-workers, mingling at networking events, or meeting with potential clients. There are plenty of reasons why you may choose bedrngnis to drink- religious reasons, personal reasons, health reasons, or a history of addiction, or maybe you just dont like the taste. Whatever the rationale, heres how to navigate it at workTake the Pressure Off YourselfIan Foster, an entrepreneur based in Alaska, hasnt drank since he was a teenager. When he travels for work, specifically when attending booking conferences for music tours with his business partner, hes constantly turning down offers for drinks. These are people I want to impress and I want to like me. Theyre people that its important to socialize with, because theyre not just looking at the power of my craft, theyre looking at the way I get along with other people, he says. And his first concern when he mentions he doesnt drink is that people will think hes not fun.Kate Campion, blogger and founder of My Sweet Home Life, felt similarly after she stopped drinking It was actually harder for me when I first stopped drinking and had to go from being the party girl at my workplace to the one who was getting sober. I really had no option at the beginning than just to say no to all things until I was comfortable handling situations involving alcohol.Having to bring up something as personal as choosing not to drink in front of your colleagues can be incredibly daunting. Theres a fear, as Foster described to me, that you bring less to the table. Or, that people will hold your past against you or coerce you to participate, as was the case with Campion. However, many of the people I spoke with emphasized that while peer pressure isnt uncommon, its usually a lot less present than youd think.I think a lot of people go into these situations thinking you have to drink in order to become part of the in crowd, says Foster. Thats such a lie- because Ive had so many people who give me a hard time in the moment...but theyve all come back and said, I respect that.Foster goes on to mention that not only do people respect his decision, but theyre also mora inclined to trust his character and judgement They know Im always going to be sober and Im always going to be clear- if something needs to happen they can trust my intellect to handle it.The point? Youre probab ly putting more pressure on yourself to participate than others are putting on you. So stick to your guns and go in confident that in the end nobody really cares whether or not you drink.Practice What Youll SayOf course, pressure still exists, and being able to handle it is important- for your health and for your work relationships.I think its so individual, says Kelifern Pomeranz, Psy.D., a clinical psychologist based in Silicon Valley who both specializes in addiction and is a non-drinker herself. A lot of how much you share depends on your company culture, she says. Do you normally share personal details with your manager or co-workers? And, do you feel comfortable doing so?Often Pomeranz will role play with her clients to practice how theyll tell their stories and how they should handle various responses. Doing this can take the pressure off in the moment and help you stand your ground when someone broaches the subject. And you dont have to give all the details, she adds. It can be as simple as saying I dont drink or politely declining their offer.Foster usually picks this strategy when meeting with business contacts Im not trying to sell out or make it sound like a negotiation, so its important to be firm with it. When someone offers him a drink- in one instance he described, a woman basically shoved it under his nose- he declines. But I smile and I thank them, and I thank them sincerely, he adds. Drinks are expensive, he explains, and so he understands the person is making a nice gesture and thats worth acknowledging. And then I quickly move on to something else. Like, How about this karaoke, isnt this crazy? No matter your situation, says Pomeranz, you have the right to choose whether you tell your story. Having a line in your back pocket such as I used to drink and I choose not to now or I dont like the taste of alcohol or I have to drive home may be all you need to get people to change the topic. You can even inject some humor to keep the conversation light, as Rob Lewis- who works in sales at an equipment rental company and decided to stop drinking altogether shortly after a work mishap several years ago- suggests. My usual response is something goofy like, The world cant handle me sober, so imagine if I was drunk. In short, you dont owe people anything- so dont be afraid to turn them away. People that are really in your face about it arent respectful of you and your choices, says Campion. Have an Alternative Plan in PlaceSometimes, it may not make sense to explain yourself- or, it does but the explanation still isnt convincing the person to leave you alone. Many of the people I spoke with agreed that when this happens, its best to have some kind of backup plan in place. Maybe that means ordering yourself a seltzer or water so people see something in your hand and are less likely to bring it up. Or, you can offer to be the designated driver so its understood why youre not drinking. If I was in some awkward situation where not accep ting a drink would raise flags, I would consider taking it but leaving it on the table, says Campion. Some people are perfectly comfortable being around co-workers who drink or going to events at bars. But others may not be.If you feel triggered by others drinking alcohol, do what you need to do to take care of yourself, says Pomeranz. You can take frequent breaks from the situation if needed, spend your time around other co-workers who dont drink or minimally drink, and leave the event early if you absolutely cannot tolerate it. And, of course, you can always choose not to go to an event altogether as long as its not mandatory.Find Activities and Places That Dont Require DrinkingTake advantage of those moments during the day when drinking is definitely not involved to get to know your co-workers in a more comfortable setting. Go on meeting walks, or bestattungs coffee or lunch with individual colleagues.Outside the office, there are plenty of other options for team anleiheing. When attending conferences, he encourages his colleagues to go and do something fun like go-karting or something that takes us out of that bar environment, says Lewis. Or, hell simply suggest hanging out at a restaurant, where food is equally the focus- and where more or less your colleagues feel embarrassed if they get drunk there. Many companies also provide sports leagues and clubs for employees to join to get to know each other. But if theres nothing in place, make it happen- start your own thing, says Foster. Get a small group together that loves to read and create a book club. Or, take your team to an escape room challenge. Or, as we do at The Muse, gather a few folks together on a Friday night to play board games in the office. The key is to find something that feels like a safe space for everyone, says Campion Sure people might be drinking at some of these, but its not the focus.Pay it ForwardAs someone who knows what its like to be a non-drinker at work, you have the power to chan ge your companys culture to be more inclusive.Peoples reasons for not drinking are very personal. So I always give people the same respect that Im hoping to get myself, says Foster. This means that just as he doesnt like people prying into his reasons, he doesnt dig too deep into others. Many companies also dont think to organize activities around those who dont drink, so if youre part of your companys social committee or know people who are, you can help bring in some more activity-based functions that dont revolve around drinking, says Campion. You may feel alone in your situation, but you might be surprised to find that others are in a similar boat. If anything, some colleagues might appreciate the opportunity to get to know their teammates sans alcohol. The truth is- and you know this- just because you dont drink doesnt mean you cant still socialize and bond with your co-workers. If input from these employees isnt enough to convince you otherwise, just remember that 100% of your t ime together in the office is alcohol-free (Id hope), and that time can be just as valuable as any happy hour. Mainly, be yourself and do what makes you most comfortable- people will ultimately respect and admire you for it.

How to live the good life 4 easy secrets backed by research

How to live the good life 4 easy secrets backed by research How to live the good life 4 easy secrets backed by research Much of being an adult is about controlling your emotions - or even dampening them. But in the end, you want all these adult-y things you do to lead to positive emotions, right? “The good life” is all about  how you  feel.Yet feelings  aren’t very welcome  in the workplace and they’re not taught much in schools. So as adults we get plenty of practice  in controlling emotions but  little info when it comes to boosting them. How do we learn about feeling good and connecting with others? I decided to call a guy who has  the answers…Dacher Keltner  is a professor of psychology and the director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley. He’s an expert on emotions - so much so that Pixar had him help with the development of the film  Inside Out. His excellent  book is:  Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life.Dacher has found that much of what makes you  feel good  and improves your relationships  comes down to  some simple things we all learned as kids. Stupidly simple things. But that’s why we forget to do them more often - they’re just so  basic. But just because they’re simple doesn’t mean they’re not powerful. They’re way powerful. Godzilla-in-a-pissy-mood powerful. And the other benefit to these things being so simple is you have no  excuse not to do them more often, lazybones.Alright, let’s get to it. Here’s what Dacher says we need to remember…SmileYou have a happiness muscle. No, there isn’t a machine for it at the gym, but when you use it, you feel good and your stress levels plummet. It’s called the “orbicularis oculi.” It’s the muscle around the eyes that flexes when you give a big, genuine smile. It doesn’t  make  you happy, but the more you use it, the happier you’ll be. (Crow’s feet later in life are a small price to pay for joy, I promise you.)Some people might be thinking  â€œSo what? Yeah, smiles show happiness. Big deal.”  Actually, Dacher had a similar skep ticism years ago. He knew smiles were important, but he had no idea just  how  important…Ravenna Helson did the longest study of women’s lives that there is: The Mills Longitudinal Study. They followed 110 women who graduated from Mills College in 1959 and 1960. (In fact, they’re  still  following them more than half a century later.)Could the smiles in the women’s graduation photos predict anything about their lives decades later? Ravenna was curious to know. Dacher wasn’t. It seemed silly to him that one photo of one smile could predict someone’s  future like a crystal ball. But Dacher is a nice guy, so he helped anyway…And the study would become one of the most important he would ever be involved in. What was the result? Here’s Dacher:The warmer the woman’s smile, 20 and 30 years later she was feeling more accomplished in her goals, she was handling stress better, she was getting along better with other people, and she was more happily married. No, don’t race t o the attic to find your graduation photo. There’s something more important you need to do: give yourself more reasons to let out a huge smile each day. Chances are it might  make your next few decades much better.(To learn the 7-step morning ritual that will keep you happy all day, click  here.)Are you smiling? Good. What’s the next dead-simple thing you need to do more often?LaughIn his  book, Dacher cites studies showing laughter improves negotiations, flirting, and relationship conflicts. Are you adding comedy specials to your Netflix queue yet? No? Then I have to bring out the big guns… What happens when you  don’t  laugh? It can end your marriage. From  Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life:For couples who divorced on average 13.9 years after they were married, it was the absence of laughter that predicted the end of their bond. In the early stages of a marriage, anger and contempt are highly toxic. In the later phases of intimate relations, it is the dearth o f laughter that leads individuals to part ways. The research shows laughter does two things: it physically calms you and signals playfulness to others. And those things  can help you get through the most difficult times imaginable. How difficult?Dacher brought people who had recently lost a spouse into his lab and his team interviewed them. Some subjects  laughed when they told their stories, others didn’t. And  when the team asked the bereaved more questions, it turned out those giggles signaled much, much more. Here’s Dacher:The  laughers were better able to connect to other people in the process of bereavement. They were forming new social networks and new alliances. The second thing is, they handled stress better. They showed less stress over the next two to four years.Death and bereavement are serious stuff. But serious doesn’t mean we shouldn’t laugh. Sometimes it means we need to laugh  more. Here’s Dacher:We often think laughter is not that consequential. We tell pe ople not to laugh. Life is serious, but there may be no more serious antidote to living and no greater path to finding wisdom, than laughter. (To learn  more about how you can  use humor to  improve your life, click  here.)Alright, time to  get more interactive. What can you do with others that makes life great? Well, we’ll need to learn about the weirdest study Dacher has ever done…TouchI’ll let Dacher explain this one:A  person comes to the lab and they stick their arm through this barrier. Another person comes into the lab. We give them a list of emotions and say, “Touch that forearm over there and try to communicate these different emotions.” That person clasps the arm to communicate gratitude, or they try to touch the person to try to communicate compassion, etc. Then the person who has just been touched on their forearm tries to guess  the  emotion. And what happened? After receiving a mere quarter-second touch  on the arm people were able to guess the correct  emotion  seven or eight times better than random chance. Those little touches are like a broadband connection of feelings between you and others. Now not  all  emotions are correctly identified by  all  people. And, frankly, this explains a lot about some troubles you may  have faced. What happened when a woman tried to convey anger when touching a man’s arm? And what happened when a man tried to convey sympathy to a woman? Ummm…From  Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life:The male participants had no idea what the females were doing, and the males’ judgment data amounted to a random collection of guesses at what the women were trying to convey. A woman’s anger does not seem to penetrate the skin of a man. Regrettably, it gets worse. The male participants’ attempts to communicate sympathy to the females were absolutely unintelligible to the females; the males’ attempts at sympathy fell on deaf skin, so to speak.Okay, so touch communicates feelings, but not perfectly for  all  feelings for  all  people. But  touching is still vital for our relationships with others. To find out why, we need to talk about fig hting in basketball…Dacher’s a big basketball player. He estimates he’s played about 4500 games. How many fights has he seen in this game of big men crashing into one another? Zero. Statistically speaking, “That level of violence (0) proves pickup basketball to be more peaceful than randomly sampled interactions between marital partners, siblings, family members at Thanksgiving, crowds celebrating their football team’s triumph, (and) people parking to go to the theater.”How the heck does  such a physical sport produce so little violence? Because touching promotes cooperation. Actually, it does more than that: it produces success.  After  studying every team in the NBA during the 2008 season Dacher  found:The more the team touched each other, the better they played at the end of the year. It got them a couple of victories. Secondly, the more a player touched his teammates, the better they would play.Want to let others know how you’re feeling? Want to be a better “team ”? Touch the people around you.(To learn more about how  to use touch to improve your life, click  here.)I know what some people are thinking: “Smile, laugh, touch. That stuff is obvious. Tell me something I don’t already know.”I feel like I’m being teased. But that’s okay. In fact, it’s perfect…Tease The One You LoveWe’re not talking about  bullying  here; we’re talking about playful teasing. And you may want to start doing it in your romantic relationship ASAP.Couples that tease each other are happier and stay together longer. From  Born to Be Good: The Science of a Meaningful Life:The more satisfied couples were more adroit at teasing… The playfulness of their fifteen-second teasing, we additionally found, predicted how happy the couples were six months later. In fact, playful teasing is so powerful that it’s a great idea  in the middle of an argument. Here’s Dacher:Happy couples tease a lot when they’re in conflict and they tease in these really goofy, lighthearted ways that say, “The fact that you don’t do the dishes bothers me, but I still love you. It’s not that big a deal; we can work this out.” They tease in ways that allow them to express issues of conflict, but in a cooperative and pleasant way. It predicted how long they’d stay together.Being 100% sweet  all the time isn’t the safe bet, it’s sterile. Don’t condemn or criticize, but teasing lightens things up.(To learn the four rituals neuroscience says will make you happy, click  here.)Sum UpHere’s how to live the good life and easily boost the positive emotions in your life: Smile: Flex that happiness muscle. (Feel free to thank me repeatedly over the next three decades.) Laugh: How many things prevent  divorce and can help you deal with the passing of a loved one? Touch: Telling them how you feel need not involve  telling. And you’ll be a better team. Tease: Free your inner snark. A little teasing  makes things fun. And it makes things  last. Nietzsche once wrote:A person’s maturity consists in having found again the seriousness one had as a child, at play. And what do kids do a lot more often than we adults do? Smile. Laugh. Touch. Tease.Okay, we’ve learned a lot. Is your Arrogance Showing

Is your Arrogance Showing Is your Arrogance Showing I ask this after having an interesting discussion with my nana. She lives in a senior (ages 55+) apartment complex where one of the assistant managers at apartment complex “talks down” to seniors. She said the manager consistently challenges the residents’ intelligence, belittling their competence in multiple ways. For example, one resident reported a broken microwave to which the manager rudely asked, “Do you just mean it’s dirty? Is it clean?” The manager also said, “You have to enter the time for it to work,” as if this resident didn’t understand how to properly work a microwave. “She has to show that she’s the boss,” my nana had said. “Very arrogant.” This led me to think about the many folks in positions of authority throughout businesses. How many managers and supervisors out there show that they are the bosses, knowingly and unknowingly? How many treat their workers as if they are inferior and/or incompetent? So, below I’ve outlined just four ways for you, as the boss, to tell if your arrogance might be (or is) showing: 1. Talk down to employees. Take note of your speech and choice of language when talking to (or referring to) your employees. Do you talk down to workers and use language and phrases that insinuate they are inferior to you and/or others in positions of authority? This could be anything from saying, “You entry-level worker” or “those people” when referring to workers whose positions fall beneath yours on the organization’s hierarchical chart. Or even refusing to acknowledge a worker by name. And sometimes, it’s not always what you say, but how you say it. Workers can tell if a manager is on an “ego trip” from his or her tone of voice and body and facial expressions. Remember, every employee has a part to play in ensuring the success of your company. Every employee is important and should be treated with respect. 2. Always challenging employees’ ideas. Every time a worker approaches you with a new idea or project, do you disregard it? Do you counter your employees’ ideas, coming up with reasons why they won’t work or why they aren’t good enough? If so, you may be showing your arrogance. Some managers are not very open to new ideas from their workers because they don’t perceive them as intelligent enough or capable of coming up with a “worthy” idea or project for the team/department. Remember, your employees are a part of your team for a reason; they have the necessary skills (and bring something unique to the table) to complete the job. 3. Lack of trust Do you constantly go over your employees’ assignments, checking for every little error? I once worked for a small publishing company as an editor (take note that I edit for my day job). The owner constantly re-checked my and the other employees’ work, often taking hours that could’ve been used for other projects. Although she hired us, she did not trust us to do the work like she would. Don’t act like your workers haven’t been trained. They obviously had the skills and experience to land the job. A lack of trust only causes more (unnecessary) work for you. 4. Overstating your title. Have you ever met anyone who constantly had to remind you of what he/she has? “I have a PhD.” “I went to Harvard.” “I am the community manager.” Let me spell it out: A-n-n-o-y-i-n-g. Don’t allow your arrogance to blatantly show by stating, restating and overstating your title and or what you possess. I’m sure your workers know your position’s title and status- very well.

Top 10 Space Missions Set to Explore New Frontiers - 2

Top 10 Space Missions Set to Explore New Frontiers - 2 Top 10 Space Missions Set to Explore New Frontiers - 2 Top 10 Space Missions Set to Explore New Frontiers, Part 2 Part One of Top 10 Space Missions Set to Explore New Frontiers looked at the first five important space missions that are underway or in their planning stages. Here are the next five. If we cant get someone (to the moon) in the 2020s, itll be sad.Jeffrey Hoffman, former U.S. astronaut and MIT professor 6.) Parker Solar Probe: Due to launch in July, the Parker Solar Probe will fly straight through the suns corona about 3.8 million from the surface closer than any previous mission. Earth, by the way, is about 93 million miles from the sun. The goal of the mission is to gather more information about the sun and the effect its solar winds have on planetary atmospheres. For protection, the spacecraft and instruments are housed in a 4.5-inch-thick carbon-composite shield that will need to bear temperatures up to 2,500 F (1,377 C). 7.) BepiColombo: Other agencies besides NASA conduct space missions. European Space Agency and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency are launching BepiColombo, which will study Mercury, the planet thats closest to the sun and the least explored. Two orbiters will try to unveil the planets secrets, including its composition and atmosphere. Scientists will also look to answer a critical question of how it fares so close to the sun. Previous fly-bys have provided pictures of the planet, but information about its chemical composition, core, and weather details remain a mystery. For You: Flying to Space on Butterfly Wings 8.) Chandrayaan 2: The moon which we know much about thanks to the Apollo missions seems uncool after the discovery of mysterious planets where extraterrestrial beings could exist. But India is still trying to catch up in the space race and hopes to launch its first mission to the moon by the end of 2018. Itll have an orbiter, lander and rover, which will collect information on the lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance, lunar exosphere, and signatures of hydroxyl and water-ice, says the Indian Space Research Organisation. Hoffman believes the U.S. should also be sending more people to the moon. If we cant get someone there in the 2020s, itll be sad. One of the big hang-ups is a lunar lander, he says, suggesting that contracting the lander construction to the private sector could solve that problem. But humans arent necessarily needed for many space missions, says Penn States Ford, adding that robots perform better in outer space. But some organizations still want to send people to the moon. Five teams, for example, are now competing for Googles $30 million Lunar X prize to provide cheap access the moon. Europa Clipper spacecraft rendering. Image: NASA. 9.) Europa Clipper: Jupiters moon Europa is thought to have conditions to support life, including an ocean. The next step is to research it and thats what the Europa Clipper mission will do. The mission launch date could be between 2020 and 2025, though budget issues could force delays. The initial idea was to do a fly-by, but landing on the planet has also been proposed. One of the goals is to see whether there is an ocean under the icy crust, a key to supporting human life. 10.) ARIEL: The discovery of hundreds of thousands of exoplanets has raised more questions on how they were formed and operate in solar systems. ESAs ARIEL (Atmospheric Remote-sensing Infrared Exoplanet Large-survey) is scheduled to launch in 2028 to answer some of them. The mission will focus on studying hot and warm planets, their compositions, atmospheres and related stars. Scientists will try to look for common patterns that may define the formation and evolution of planetary systems and atmospheres. Agam Shah is an associate editor at Mechanical Engineering magazine. Call Center Resume Sections Header Personal Information Profile Title Summary Key Skills Professional Experience Education Certification Awards And Recognition Languages Stages Of Writing A Resume For Call Center The call center representative resume making process is broken down into the following four stages: Compilation Call Center Customer Service Representative Resume Master Call Center Representative Resume First Draft Call Center Resume Final Call Center Customer Service Representative Resume Compilation Stage For Your Call Center Resume In this first stage of call center representative resume making, all the information needs to be collected at one place. Collecting all the information at one place makes it easier to proceed further in the process as there won't be any need to look for the information at other places now. Master Resume Making the master call center resume is the second stage of making call center customer service representative resume. In this stage make sure you have the following information: Company Name Location Dates of joining and resigning/completion of tenure Designation Points written in terms of importance for every professional experience section Hiration Pro-Tip: Save a copy of the master call center resume so that you are able to tweak your call center representative resume later according to every job description. First Draft For Your Call Center Resume Making the first draft of your call center representative resume is the third stage of call center resume making. In this stage, you will make the rest of the remaining call center customer service representative resume. In these sections as well, list the information in reverse chronological section in terms of date. First, write the most recent information first, then the second most information and so forth. Now, comes the fourth and last stage of call center resume making which is: The Final Resume For Call Center In this stage, first you will write the Key Skills Section. Remember not to write soft call center customer service representative resume skills and the call center resume skills that are mentioned in the job description but you don't acquire them. The second thing to do at this stage is to write the Summary section. When writing this section, remember to write your best contributions in your previous company. The third thing to do is to highlight all the important words, phrases, and numbers throughout your call center representative resume except the summary section. Call Center Resume Professional Experience Section Now that you must have completed the compilation stage, let's start off with the master call center representative resume stage which is making the professional section. This section is one of the most important section as it gives an overview of your career so far to the recruiter as well as an insight into the level of work you've done. This section is of prime importance to those people who have a long work history to include in the call center resume. Use the following format to write this section. {Name of the Organization} | {Designation} | {Location} (city, country pin) | {Dates} (in mm/yy-mm/yy) format Now let us show you with the help of an example how to write the points in the professional experience section using the cause-effect, bucketing and bolding methods. Monitoring and supervising individual and team targets Supervising attrition management Conducting activities pertaining to team building Overseeing escalations by the team members Conducting operational review and presentations Managing HNI clients by periodically contacting them The above written don't provide much information as they are not written using the cause-effect, bucketing and bolding methods. Team Leadership Performance Evaluation Monitoring and supervising individual and team targets to reach the quarterly targets of $ 1 mn Conducting activities pertaining to team building to bring out the best possible synergies Supervising attrition management while managing team's performance by taking into account leaves and approvals Client management Issue Resolution Managing HNI clients by periodically contacting them and updating the same about new products Overseeing escalations by the team members and resolving issues put up by the team Conducting Annual/Quarterly/Monthly operational review and presentations Now, the above-written points give a lot of information due to the cause-effect points as well as have increased readability due to the bucketing and bolding done in the section. Moreover, while writing this section, scan the job description first for the job responsibilities and keywords to be included in the call center customer service representative resume. Then, make this section accordingly. Besides this, write only those responsibilities which you have performed in your previous engagements and only those keywords which you acquire. Don't unnecessarily include them as it will get difficult for you to substantiate them if asked a question about in the interview. Referring to the job description is important because one look and the recruiter can tell if you put any efforts into making your call center resume according to the job description. Tweaking the call center representative resume according to the job description will also get you some extra brownie points. Considering the job description while writing your professional experience section will let the recruiter know that you put your honest efforts in whatever you do, which is an important quality that a recruiter seeks in his/her employee. Take a brief look at the call center resume sample given below to get more clarity on how to make the professional experience section. Composing Your Call Center Resume Header Now, that the master call center representative resume stage is over, let's kick off with the first draft stage. The first draft stage will start off with the header. Header comes at the very top of the call center customer service representative resume. It is basically the first thing that comes at the top of the resume. The is made up of your name. Yes, that's it! This section is of utmost importance. It separates your call center representative resume from getting confused as someone else's call center customer service representative resume. Proper spacing in the name is another important thing to keep in check. Hiration Pro-Tip: The ideal font size of your call center representative resume header should be between 14-16 points. If you have a middle name then do not write your full middle name in the call center resume header. Just write the first initial of your middle name and then a full stop after it. For example: 'Richard T. Gere' To get greater clarity on how to make a header, refer our Guide to Writing Resume Header Furthermore, you can go for Hiration's Online Resume Builder to get that perfect call center customer service representative resume header for your call center resume. Our Online Resume Builder is pre-set to write the resume header in a fixed font style and size. So, no need to indulge in the hassle of setting the font size style. Just come and make your call center representative resume absolutely hassle free. Look at the call center resume sample below to get a better idea of how a perfect call center resume header should look like. Call Center Resume Personal Information Section Now, comes the personal information section. Personal information here doesn't mean information related to religion, marital status or age. Here it means your personal phone number, personal e-mail ID and current residential location. Personal Phone Number Write the personal phone number on which you are 24x7 available. In case you use multiple phone numbers, then do not include all of them in the call center customer service representative resume. Only write that number which you use most of the time. Before writing your phone number, write the International Subscriber Dialing (ISD) code of your country. Then write a plus sign (+) before the ISD code. E-mail ID The second thing to write in the personal information section is the e-mail ID. Write that e-mail address which you use on a daily basis. It is of a lot of importance as this is one of the ways through which the recruiter might get in touch with you. Also, refrain from using e-mail ID names such as 'charmingcharlie@xyz.com'. Such names look very unprofessional and do not leave a good impact on the recruiter's mind. Current Location Of Residence In your location, you will write the current location of your residence. In case you live in a city that is not your home city then you will write the name of the city where you are living and not the name of your home city. Write the location right next to the e-mail address. Do not write the complete address. Just write the city name and the country pin. Hiration Pro-Tip: Use the format (city, state) if you're applying within your country, and the format (city, country pin) if you're applying for a job abroad. You can use the below-given format to write your personal information section. {Personal Mobile number} | {Professional E-mail Address} | {Current Location} Further, you can opt for Hiration's Resume Reviewing Service where you can get your call center representative resume professionally reviewed by Hiration's select industry experts to check if your content is relevant. Build Relationships with Hiring Managers to Interview Better

Build Relationships with Hiring Managers to Interview Better Build Relationships with Hiring Managers to Interview Better In the story of interviewing for a job, sometimes the hiring manager can become the villain. After all, if you’ve been on interview after interview, sometimes it seems like they’re listing the perfect job for you over and over again only to pull it out from under your feet after the interview. Who’d want to be friends with a villain? Not me, that’s for sure. And so it’s worth considering that the attitude of me versus you might not be the healthiest one to bring into your interview. Instead of focusing on why the next hiring manager won’t hire you, reframe your perspective. Consider ways in which you can develop a better relationship with a hiring manager to make each interview a deeper and more satisfying interaction whether you get the job or not. Here are four ideas to help you get started: Lose your preconceived notions Have you been strung along  by a hiring manager in a past interview situation? Let it go. Just as you hope the hiring manager will not hold you accountable for the rude interviewee who answered a phone during the meeting so you should be willing to start this manager off with a clean slate. Do your best to enter every interview with an eager sense of curiosity about the person you’ll meet. Be prepared to accept them as they are and make inquiries as to who they are as a person. Use all communication methods thoughtfully Don’t save your best impression for your in-person meeting. Starting with your very first email, be polite and thoughtful when you communicate with the hiring manager. Personalize your emails to the person you’re speaking with, check for good grammar and spelling errors and put some thought into your email title. Escape into the interview The goal of an interview is to get a sense of how you work, how you think and who you are. If you’re an introvert like 50 percent  of the population, it may be hard for you to put that much pressure into one 30-minute period of time without getting distracted or feeling like you can’t be yourself. However, the key to forming a good relationship with a hiring manager is to be yourself.  To help you feel more comfortable, don’t think of a job interview as a pressure performance. Try thinking of it as a brief opportunity to escape your day-to-day and to make a connection with someone else. If you focus on the one-on-one feel of two people having a conversation it will be much easier to feel that a connection is being made. Ask about the interviewer One of the best ways to connect with people is to ask them about themselves. If you can get them talking about their passions and get them feeling as if you are genuinely interested in what they are saying, they will open up to the idea that a worthwhile relationship is being formed. It might seem like this approach to building a relationship with the hiring manager makes it more of social call than a job interview, but there are plenty of ways to ask about the interviewer and get a personal connection while still keeping things professional. For example, ask them about their relationship with the company in different ways, such as “What made you decide to work for X?” Or “What are you most proud of about this organization?” Questions like these keep the conversation on topic but also reveal opportunities for a more intimate, personalized discussion. Are all hiring managers villains? Definitely not. They’re just hard-working company representatives trying to fill the open position with the best candidate possible. And the best way for you to be seen as the best candidate is to forge a better relationship with the hiring manager.

5 Ways to Breathe Life into a Dead Job Search

5 Ways to Breathe Life into a Dead Job Search 5 Ways to Breathe Life into a Dead Job Search Here are five ways to breathe life into a dead job search: 1. Create your ideal job description. Spent so much time applying to anything and everything that you’re not even sure what a “good” job looks like anymore? Gain some clarity and a renewed sense of excitement by trying this suggestion from Katy Imhoff, CEO and president of Camden Kelly Corporation: Write an ad for your dream job. What would the company be like? What kind of growth and learning opportunities would they offer you? What work-life balance benefits would they have? This creative exercise can help you focus on what you want, help you narrow down your search, and keep you motivated to look for a job that resembles the one youve been dreaming about! 2. Set your sights higher. A lack of initial success oftentimes leads job hunters to shoot lower in their job search. However, this strategy can backfire both in terms of how employers view you and how you see yourself. “Getting a job is hard enough work without trying to get a job you really don’t want,” says Carlota Zimmerman, The Creativity Yenta. “Potential employers want to experience your interest and your passion. If you’re phoning it in (during your job search), that will immediately come across and be held against you. Who wants a new team member who doesn’t want to be there? Challenge yourself to take your job search up a notch, or ten, and apply for your dream job.” 3. Get out of the house. Logging hour after hour in front of a computer can be lonely- and not always the best use of time. Many positions never make it to job boards because they are filled by word of mouth. Stepping up networking efforts increases visibility and boosts spirits. Julie Austin of Fun Job Fairs suggests volunteering because it gets you out of your own situation and makes you stand out from other job seekers as someone who gives back. “Find an event like a golf tournament, auction, or party that will have a lot of top executives in attendance,” she suggests. “Make sure you get a leadership position that puts you in direct contact with these executives. Let them see your personality and your work ethic, like being a caddy at the golf tournament. Ive had clients who were able to get into doors they could never get in on their own by making friends with celebrities and executives at a charity event.” 4. Think like a marketer. Don’t distance others by coming across as a needy job seeker. Rather, re-position yourself as a marketer tasked with promoting a valuable product- you! “Marketers are always trying to learn and improve,” says Rick Carlile, founder of Aegora.com. “Ask yourself the same  questions they do. Why hasnt your marketing worked so far? What can you do to improve it? Are you targeting the right people? What are their  pain points, and how does your product solve them? Are you packaging  your product optimally? What could you do to grab their attention better?” 5. Be a little bolder in your approach. Lastly, consider taking on a new challenge. You’ll get the creative juices flowing, and the novelty may be the perfect way to perk up spirits. David Bakke, career expert at Money Crashers, offers this unusual idea: Try posting yourself and resume on eBay as a product to be sold. You are the product, put your desired salary as the asking price, and then list it as a bid auction. Send the link to your potential employers, and they should be intrigued by your creativity. Find what re-energizes you. Enroll in a class on a topic of interest- it will give you something new to talk about and demonstrate your dedication to lifelong learning. Design your own website to showcase accomplishments. Attend your first alumni event in 15 years. The sky is the limit! Looking for another way to give your dead job search some life? Working mothers should move to Vermont, study says

Working mothers should move to Vermont, study says Working mothers should move to Vermont, study says As Mother’s Day approaches, we want to give a shoutout to all the working moms out here. We know that it can be a grind: 40% of full-time working mothers told the Pew Research Center that they don’t spend enough time with their kids and that being a working parent makes it harder to advance in their careers.Nor are working moms some kind of minority: this is a reality for millions of American women in the workforce:  70.5% of all mothers  with children under age 18  are working or looking for work in the U.S.There’s a new study that wants to make it easier for working mothers by highlighting the best and worst states for them to balance raising their families and advancing their careers.Using child care, professional opportunities and work-like balance as the criteria, finance website WalletHub analyzed government data sets and parental-related research  for 50 states and the District of Columbia. They scored each state based on  13 metrics that included day-care quality and co sts, gender pay gaps, share of families in poverty, commute times and parental leave policies. Child-care policies  were  weighted the most at 40 points.Vermont is the best state, Alabama is the worst stateWalletHub concluded that Vermont, Minnesota and New Jersey were the overall top three states for working moms. Meanwhile, Nevada, Louisiana and Alabama ranked the lowest.WalletHub analyst Jill Gonzalez explained the disparity between the best and worst state: “Vermont did well across all three categories analyzed,” she told Ladders. “It has the highest number of pediatricians in the country at 32 per 100,000 residents. The lack of pediatricians sunk Alabama, however. “For this specific metric, Alabama ranked below average, 28th, with just seven pediatricians per 100,000 residents,” Gonzalez noted.Vermont was overall the best for women’s careers because “in terms of professional opportunities, [Vermont]  has the 6th highest ratio of female executives to male executives at 61%, almost two times higher than in Alabama at just 33%,” Gonzalez noted.Additionally, “female unemployment in Vermont is low at just 3.1 percent, while in Alabama the unemployment rate is two times higher at 6.2 percent.”Other interesting facts from the study: Hawaii has the lowest gender pay gap as a state and South Dakota has the best male-to-female executive ratio. As part of the top ten states for working moms, New York had  the top day-care  system in terms of quality but also held  the dubious honor of  the 48th most expensive day care system in America.“We considered that the quality of care that the states offer is more important than the costs, given the ‘get what you pay for’ mentality surrounding childcare,” Gonzalez said.Flexibility is needed for working parentsFor states to get ranked higher, government and employee policies will need to be part of the solution. Finding flexible work policies and better parental leave are at the top of  every working parent’s mind.As sociology professor Harmony D. Newman told WalletHub: “Although these policies have been linked with numerous positive outcomes for  parents, children and employers, that they are few and far between, continues to leave many American families in the lurch.”Newman said  that government-funded pre-schools and better parental leave policies are key: “When parents can afford and feel secure in where their children are spending time while they are at work, parents are much more likely to be productive and remain committed to their work environment.”

Guide to Writing Realistic Dialogue

Guide to Writing Realistic Dialogue Guide to Writing Realistic Dialogue Your first draft of a story may be messy, with a lot of unnecessary words and phrases. Youll probably find that as you edit your dialogue, it will become more succinct. Try to think in terms of speech patterns, and less about storytelling through your dialogue. Listen to how people talk and pay attention to what your characters are already familiar with. For your dialogue to be realistic, both the characters AND the reader need to believe it. Keep Sentences Short In general, keep sentences short. Oakley Hall, in The Art and Craft of Novel Writing, offers the rule, One thought at a time and keep the lines short. Most people dont talk in perfectly formed, complex sentences. For example, in this passage from Raymond Carvers What We Talk About When We Talk About Love, note how short and simple most of the sentences are: When I left, he drank rat poison, Terri said. She clasped her arms with her hands. They took him to the hospital in Santa Fe. Thats where we lived then, about ten miles out. They saved his life. But his gums went crazy from it. I mean they pulled away from his teeth. After that, his teeth stood out like fangs. My God, Terri said. Cut Unnecessary Dialogue Paring down your sentences may not be enough, however. Chances are, therell be scenes you wrote for yourself, to get to the next part of the story. Cut any unnecessary dialogue. If it doesnt build character or advance your plot, edit it out. In the Gotham Writers Workshop guide to writing fiction, Allison Amend explains it this way: The realism of good dialogue is something of an illusion. Readers of fiction have a higher expectation for dialogue than the conversations of real life. Fictional dialogue needs to have more impact, focus, relevance, than ordinary conversation. A conversation about the correct route to take when driving, for instance, is extraneous if it goes like this: So I think we should take Elm all the way to Lincoln, Mary said, the map spread across her lap.Is that really the best way? Mel asked her. What if we hit traffic? But its Sunday. Well be fine. Theres no tension and nothing necessary is revealed here, so theres no reason to include this scene, though it is true to life. Presumably, these characters are on their way to something important: why not fast-forward to those key scenes, and leave out the logistics of getting there?   On the other hand, if the scene were to reveal something about Mel and Marys relationship, something that mattered to the plot, we would keep it: Why arent we taking Elm? Mary asked.Did I ask your opinion? Mel said, switching lanes a bit too quickly. When you drive, you can pick the route. But Im driving, so Ill pick the godd*n route.Fine, fine, Mary said. With a sigh, she reached over to switch on the radio. If youd ever let me drive, then maybe I could, she said under her breath. Further Reading For more, check out  How Do People Talk in Fiction?  where you find information on how to edit your sentences so they sound like real dialogue, use dialogue correctly, and learn more about when to use dialect.
